A life with light

From laser science to laser medicine in China.

01

Beginning with a new field

After graduating from Huazhong Institute of Technology, Professor Li joined the university’s newly formed laser programme. Eleven teachers built the discipline from the ground up, combining intensive study, laboratory work and international exchange. Their early results helped Wuhan’s laser research become visible beyond China.

02

The pursuit of bloodless surgery

Working with clinicians, Professor Li explored how flexible optical fibres could turn a rigid laser beam into a practical surgical tool. In 1979, the Nd:YAG fibre-optic surgical system he led entered clinical trials at Wuhan Tongji Hospital and Wuhan Third Hospital, helping establish domestic laser medicine.

03

Bringing light-based care closer to families

His research expanded from surgical lasers to optical imaging, laser acupuncture and the biological effects of low-level light. In 2008 he supported the development of a compact high-power integrated LED treatment system, continuing the effort to make optical therapy more accessible.

04

Laser technology will not become obsolete

Professor Li sees Optics Valley as both a stage for laser development and the result of decades of disciplinary and industrial accumulation. His career connects university research, engineering centres, standards, industry associations and medical-device translation—a continuing belief that frontier optical science can create practical value for health.
